Supporting yourself as a LEADER

Offering empathy and assistance to your team can be both rewarding and demanding. It’s natural to prioritize their needs, but prioritizing your own is crucial for sustained support.

L – Leave room for conversations

Leave room for employee conversations about well-being and mental health. You should listen to your employees, but avoid providing support outside of the scope of your role (therapy counseling). Instead, point them to Employee Assistance Program (EAP), your HRBP, or other resources as needed.

E – Encourage communication

Communication works both ways: encourage your employees to come forward with their questions and concerns. Realistic, thoughtful, and everyday communication can have a powerful effect on employee well-being. Sometimes it can be difficult to know what to say when someone comes to us to share a distressing experience or a mental health concern; utilize the T.A.L.K approach.

A – Adapt your leadership style

Adapt your leadership style to meet employee needs. Every employee has different preferences and faces a unique set of challenges. Balancing the needs of your employees with work objectives shows commitment to fostering a supportive workplace.

D – Demonstrate exemplary behavior

As a leader, your actions set the tone for your employees. Adopt self-care strategies and check-ins and encourage your employees to do the same.

E – Engage in social activities

Leaders must ensure that social connection and employee engagement are maintained for the overall well-being and morale of employees. Plan regular social interactions that employees can participate in regardless of work location.

R – Remember you are not alone!

New situations present learning opportunities for both leaders and employees. Additionally, it can be easy to over-identify with what an employee is experiencing or going through because we care. It is important to ensure that we maintain appropriate boundaries and not be the single source of support for an employee in order to avoid pitfalls such as burnout and compassion fatigue. Be patient and accepting with yourself and others. Always know you can seek guidance or mental health support to help you manage.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Support

The more employees and Cast Members use their EAP, the more supported, resilient, and productive they can be. These benefits aren’t just for your employees; they’re for you too!
